The standard EN 13432 for “Packaging - Requirements for packaging recoverable
through composting and biodegradation - Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final
acceptance of packaging” is currently under revision.
It is to be expected that stricter measures will be taken in the standard to ensure the
avoidance and/or reduction of structural non-biodegradable polymers due to an
increasing issue of persistent microplastics in compost and environment.
To effectively prepare holders of OK compost INDUSTRIAL, OK compost HOME,
OK biodegradable SOIL, OK biodegradable WATER and OK biodegradable MARINE
certificates for potential changes in the upcoming revision of EN 13432, - which is the
underlying standard for all biodegradability certification schemes -, and to protect the
environment, TÜV AUSTRIA
- confirms the ban on the intentionally use of the homopolymers polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate
(PET), polyamide (PA), rubber (polyisoprene) and polyvinylchloride (PVC)
from its certified compositions, regardless of the concentration, for all products.
- bans the use of polyethylene wax and the homopolymer polyvinylidene
dichloride (PVDC), regardless of the concentration, by 31/12/2026 for all
products.
New applications, extensions and prolongations are permitted. However, validity
of such certificates is always limited to 31/12/2026.
TÜV AUSTRIA strongly encourages its certificate holders to revise compositions
containing these before 31/12/2026 in an extensional certification procedure.
Ink series and adhesives are currently exempt from this ban.
Only homopolymers are concerned.
Constituents and products not addressed in this communication will still follow the same
certification rules of the relevant certification scheme(s)
